Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC):

For any development process i.e. from software creation to
software retirement the development team follows a sequential
development model. Example of a sequential development model
is classic SDLC model. In a classic waterfall model after each
phase is completed the process proceeds to the next phase. The
classic waterfall model has certain inherent limitation and hence
it has been modified, upgraded and evolved to Spiral Model,
Rapid Prototyping etc to Agile Methodology and
multi-dimensional Rational Unified Process (RUP).

Typical Software Development Life Cycle is broken down into the
following seven phases:

Project Planning: In this phase the scope, duration, resource
availability, limitations, risk factors, risk mitigation, software &
hardware requirements etc are addressed.

Requirements Gathering & Analysis: In the requirement gathering
and analysis phase System Analyst / business analysis meet
with stakeholders to finalize or fine-tune the business objective,
technical approach and other project specifications. This phase
is extremely important for a successful implementation of the
project.

Design: In the Design phase Software architecture's, DBA's,
Project manager's meet to produce an artifact about the logical
model and related description of the system. This document
together with the document created in the previous phase
(Requirements Gathering & Analysis) will serve as guideline for
the development phase.
