Configuration Management:
Configuration Management (CM) or Software Configuration
Management (SCM) controls changes and maintains the integrity
of source code, change requests, blueprint designs, artifacts
such as software requirements specification, issue list,
documentation etc, hardware and software configuration. The CM
System is an essential and integral part of the overall
development processes.
Configuration Management involves:
- Identifying configuration items
- Restricting changes to those items,
- Auditing changes made to those items, and
- Defining and managing configurations of those items
SCM is essential for controlling the numerous documents
produced by the different people who work on a project. It helps
to in avoiding costly errors due to simultaneous update of code,
limited notification to involved parties, and multiple versions or
documents
